Welcome back! Day two of working at Kualoa! I had a pretty good day! I had a great day yesterday and was excited to come back. I kinda knew what we were doing but I was sad we didn't get to work with the pigs, they were so cute. So when we first got there we spent all morning working in the shade house, which is sort of like a nursery for baby plants. We mainly organized and rearraigned plants to clean up the area and switch the irrigation system. So basically putting old nursery beds onto weedmat. We also cleaned the weedmat, weeded, and moved the plants around. The plants that were in the shadehouse were mostly cacao, noni, ulu, and banana trees. After reorganizing the plants we had to fill them with new water drip lines. That was tedious because they had to be put a certain way to make sure the water couldn't get out, and when we were doing one side I did a whole row without realizing I had but them in backwards! So I had to go back and redo the entire row. We then had a lunch break, and had lots of water as well as hydrating Gatorade from Mrs. Peeler. For the last hour and forty five minutes we worked up on the mountain side, weeding the Avocado trees. Our day was pretty good, although on my way back to the truck two nasty wasps stung me! I didn't even see them, it was so weird. One got me on my lower lip and one on my back, they felt like fuzzy and prickly at the same time. It didn't hurt bad it just swelled a lot. I mean, it looked like I got lip injections on half of my lips! We went back to the school after that.
A couple of things I learned from today is one, I am not allergic to wasps, two, snails are bad and you want to kill them, and three, working together gets the work done quicker. To day we had a lot of teamwork to do, in school I did a lot of projects and worked with people before but this, if we didn't work together and stay organized the entire task would take forever. To explain lesson number two, I learned that snails are invasive and really bad for the plants in Hawaii, so we spent ten minutes killing like 20 snails, I know that sound harsh but we didn't want them to harm the baby plants!! It was a mass grave over there, but at least the plants are saved. I'm excited for what we will be doing tomorrow! They didn't tell but I hope its with animals, just hopefully anywhere other than the avocado tree area...See you guys tomorrow!!!
Here are some pictures from today:
