Day three!! Today was a lot of fun, we met two new supervisors, Jen and Miguel. Jen unfortunately got a head injury and had to go home but Miguel was with us the rest of the day. I had no idea what to expect for the day but I was ready for anything! They all explained how they got into agriculture and why it is important to keep learning. We first started the morning by figuring out how to move the chicken pen. There was a movable coop pen around the chickens, and they were rotating it every couple of days so we helped them. Lots of teamwork and communication was important for this. The field had previously had sweet potatoes, then cover crop, and now chickens. The chickens kept pecking at the grass, and helped get the soil ready for other plants. That didn’t take a long time, so the rest of the day we were with Miguel and the Banana plants. We learned a lot from him. All of the bananas are his responsibility and so he taught us a little about them:
Bananas are plants (Herbs), don’t call them trees.
You can’t have too many keikis around a tree, this is for the sunshine, pest and nutrient control.
Banana plants are mostly made up of water
Me, Ellie, and Amanda spent our time weeding around the trees then putting mulch from the horses onto that area. Everyone else cut out the keikis. There were a lot of plants to do, four rows of maybe fifteen or twenty mats (banana plant with keikis around it) each row. We finished the first two before lunch, and then we took a lunch break. After that we did the last two rows, but we did them SO fast. I mean my hands are so sore from weeding but we got both done in under an hour. We also got to visit the little piglets again. They were so adorable. They snuggled up and wanted us to pet them. At first they are jumpy, but if you let them sniff you they don't mind if you pet them!
I really liked our supervisor Miguel today, he's super nice and friendly! He talked a lot too so we learned a lot more than some of our other days. I am super sad to leave this area, I really liked all of the things we did. I will try my hardest tomorrow since it's our last day. I think we made the most of our time in this area, I’m so glad we got to come here. I learned so much about the Bananas today, and we have learned a lot over the week. I can’t wait for tomorrow! I think me and Ellie are going to work with the pigs again! I’ll update tomorrow!
